SAF Day Speech by Defence Minister Teo Chee Hean
Defence Minister Teo Chee Hean says the Singapore Armed Forces is doing its best to keep servicemen safe while ensuring that training is realistic.
Mr Teo said this in a wide-ranging SAF Day interview.
He said the SAF faces a dilemma in trying to strike a balance between realistic training and safe training.
"I think that is a dilemma which not just the SAF faces, but which every armed forces faces - how to conduct training in as realistic an environment possible, because that is what is needed for the soldiers, sailors and airmen should they ever get into a conflict," Mr Teo said.
"But how to do it safely? If you don't do it as realistically as possible, you are actually doing a dis-service to your soldiers, sailors and airmen, because when they need to perform their operational duties, they are not ready. But at the same time, we have to do it safely."
